Scope

Restoration and renovation of iconic, listed building.

The listed building that houses Danmarks Nationalbank was designed by Denmark’s famous architect Arne Jakobsen and build in the years 1965-1978. Today architecture students from all over the world still travel to Copenhagen to study the building.

In 2009 the iconic building was listed by the Agency for Culture and Palaces, and this requires special care in the process of restoring and renovating it.

All work is therefore carried out in close coordination with the Agency for Culture and Palaces in relation to the preservation of the building’s architectural expression and design outside and inside.

EKJ is the lead consultant on the project together with Rørbæk and Møller Architects.

Approach

Our primary services:

  • Complete renovation of the listed building – both outside and inside
  • Ensuring a good indoor climate and low energy consumption that matches the sustainability requirements of a modern building
  • Updating of all the building’s technical installations – including a new ventilation system
  • Climate protection against sea level rise and cloudbursts – including by means of 170 ground anchors
  • Replacement of marble slab cladding and roof construction
  • Renovation of glass facades, windows and courtyard

Outcome

The project is one of Denmark’s largest and most complex restorations of a listed modernist building. The building was constructed using challenging building techniques in order to secure the innovative modernist design, and it was built at a time, where energy consumption wasn’t yet a concern. This means that we, in close collaboration with the Agency for Culture and Palaces and the architects, have to develop new solutions and approaches.
