Scope

The new bus station is to be built slightly to the south of the current location.

This requires adjustments to the bicycle parking spaces and the traffic solution for motorized private transport. Transit traffic is to be directed to the bypass roads. In addition, an underground bicycle station for 1,100 bicycles will be built under the station square and connected to the existing Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) underpasses. In terms of traffic engineering, the narrow spaces had to be considered. The traffic concept provides for the bus station square to be closed to motorized individual traffic. The other streets will be integrated into the city’s 30 km/h concept. The kerbs were modified compared to the master plan and equipped with a stop of 22 cm in accordance with BEHIG (Disability Equality Act). The trailing curves were additionally checked by means of driving tests. The design and lighting were checked across the entire station area and coordinated with the surrounding projects.

Approach

Thanks to a convincing project design in the competition process, suisseplan was able to enter the preliminary project directly during the development of the master plan.

Thanks to extensive experience from various railroad and bus station buildings, it was possible to work out a project with the client and other stakeholders that was capable of gaining majority support. As most of the specialist disciplines can be covered directly by suisseplan, the project was able to enter the approval and financing phase relatively quickly. Some standards and specifications changed during project processing from 2020 to 2024. The project was continuously brought up to date with the latest technology (design guidelines, sponge city principle, electromobility). By planning the supporting structures using BIM and the infrastructure overviews in GIS, the project was able to be executed in a clearly coordinated manner.

Outcome

The steel structures could be erected directly in the adjacent steelworks – so the transportation routes were short. The remaining buildings were constructed conventionally and without prefabrication in order to be able to react quickly to uncertainties in the subsoil at the adjacent railroad station.

The bus station can therefore go into operation as early as 2024. The bicycle station will go into operation at the beginning of 2026. The project will lend the station area a new quality, separate traffic flows and thus further promote cycling.
